Agricultural Program and Orphanage Support

The impact of HIV/AIDS on society is borne most heavily by the very young and the very old. They will lose mothers, fathers, children, and in some instances their entire immediate families to the pandemic. The problem of housing and caring for orphans is one of long-term concern and one that must be addressed immediately if a viable solution is to be put in place for their well-being and survival.

Care for Life operates an agricultural farm at Marrocanhe, which produces fresh vegetables and fruits and supplies them to the orphanage. We also raise chickens and goats which afford a valuable protein source to supplement the children's diets. Our farm at Marrocanhe has become a model example of self-reliance.

Family Garden Program

Family Gardens is an important part of Care for Life's Family Preservation Program. In this program, individual families receive micro loans to help them start up their own vegetable garden near their house. These loans can be from 15-28 dollars to buy materials for gardens including: seeds, watering cans, and gardening hoes. Lettuce, kale, carrots, beans and tomatoes are among the most common things planted.

Mozambique has a tradition of agriculture, as well as year round growing seasons. Gardens can be a good income generation tool for families. Families sell some of their harvest to supplement their income and put a small amount toward their initial micro loan. This garden also helps balance their family diet with nutritious items.

Families manage the gardens in our program with help from our garden promoters who teach them sustainable, organic techniques- such as composting and natural pesticides to the families. Our program is currently in four communities.

Our Family Gardens Team consists of staff that are proficient in sustainable agriculture techniques and long term solutions for families.
